# Keep Cool Air Where It Matters: Clear PVC Film for Data Center Containment Curtains
Clear separation. Flexible layouts. A material-based approach to better airflow management.
Effective data center cooling is not simply about adding cooling capacity or lowering thermostat settings. It is also about delivering conditioned air to the equipment that needs it. When supply air mixes with hot exhaust before reaching server inlets, cooling performance can suffer and energy can be wasted. Well-planned airflow management helps address this problem at its source.
Ocean Plastics supplies clear PVC film for converters and system integration partners evaluating flexible partition and containment applications, supporting curtain development from the material side.
1. Containment Curtains Separate Airflows, Not Just Spaces
Data center containment curtains use flexible film as a physical barrier at planned locations, such as aisle ends and spaces above racks. Their purpose is not to wrap or seal off equipment, but to help establish controlled paths for cooling air and hot exhaust.
In a typical hot aisle/cold aisle arrangement, server intakes face the cold aisle, while exhausts face the hot aisle. Cold aisle containment keeps supply air focused on the intake side of the equipment. Hot aisle containment separates exhaust air and directs it toward the cooling system’s return path. The appropriate approach depends on the facility’s existing airflow design, equipment layout, and operating requirements.
2. Clear Visibility with the Flexibility to Adapt
Maintain visibility across the partition.
Clear PVC film provides a see-through barrier, preserving views of racks, aisles, and personnel movement. It offers an alternative to opaque partitions where both physical separation and visual access are important.
Accommodate different site conditions.
Rack heights, aisle widths, and surrounding structures are not always uniform. Fabricators can cut and configure flexible curtains to suit the intended layout. When equipment arrangements change, individual curtain sections may be modified or replaced rather than rebuilding a larger fixed partition. This adaptability makes flexible curtain designs worth considering for existing facilities and phased expansion projects.
3. Cooling Performance Depends on the Complete Airflow Strategy
The main contribution of PVC containment curtains is airflow separation—not a high thermal insulation value inherent in the film. Effective improvements should also address unused rack spaces, cable openings, supply-air locations, and exhaust paths so that cooling air passes through equipment instead of bypassing it.
Containment should therefore be evaluated as part of a coordinated airflow improvement plan. Comparing server inlet temperatures, airflow conditions, and cooling energy use before and after installation provides a more meaningful basis for assessing performance. Actual savings should be established through site measurements and system adjustments, rather than presented as a fixed percentage delivered by the curtain material alone.
4. Dust Control Requires More Than a Physical Partition
Where dust management is also a priority, clear curtains may be considered as one component of the partitioning strategy. They should not be treated as air filters or as a guarantee of a dust-free environment.
Appropriate filtration, cleaning, maintenance, and environmental monitoring remain important. Curtain placement should also preserve the equipment’s required intake and exhaust airflow. The objective is to make the environment easier to manage—not to obstruct cooling.
5. Select the Film Around the Application
Ocean Plastics offers clear PVC film with adjustable thickness, color, and hardness to support different material requirements.
For containment applications, the selection process should begin with the intended curtain dimensions, suspension method, joint and overlap design, operating temperatures, and frequency of access. Choosing a film is not simply a matter of selecting a thicker or thinner grade; it requires understanding how the material will function within the finished curtain assembly.
Where a project specifies flame-propagation testing such as NFPA 701, or requires static-control performance, the relevant requirements and supporting test data should be confirmed for the actual film supplied. The completed containment layout should also be reviewed by qualified professionals for compatibility with fire detection, sprinklers, and other safety provisions. Material performance and system safety need to be considered separately and coordinated together.
